We specialize in making quality tools for the blacksmith, farrier, and knife-maker, custom forged work, teaching classes, and small-scale industrial forging and machining.

About
Ethan Harty (owner) is a blacksmith from Alberta, Canada. He started forging at age 11 and studied the “Tools to Make Tools” curriculum under Alec Steele at age 13 in Norfolk, UK. Some of his noteworthy honours in forging include being a demonstrator at Canada’s national blacksmithing conference (CanIRON), a demonstrator for the Texas Blacksmithing Conference, and teaching a tool making class at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT College) at age 16. In his forging company, his clients range from beginner blacksmiths, to the Calgary Stampede, to B.C. Hydro. He also has a prime interest in antique equipment of all kinds and is a certified steam power engineer.

The Classic Rounding hammer, popularized and made famous through Brian Brazeal's teachings, has become known worldwide as the most versatile hammer available. The many dies created by tilting the hammer head in certain ways means you can manipulate the steel with such great precision, control and ease, that you will rarely need to use another hammer. Even for the widest of lateral draws, simply tilting the hammer to reduce your surface area of contact will mean you will move your steel faster and cleaner than with any other hammer.

The cross or straight peen hammer is used for extreme lateral draws (making material as wide as possible as you flatten it with the peen). Farriers also use these hammers for making clips on shoes, making bends etc. This is a stylish cross peen is needed in every iron worker’s tool hoard!

This hammer is a simple, but classy version of the rounding hammer. The grinding, finishing, and functioning of this hammer is the same as the classic rounding hammer. I think the overall design of this hammer is very sleek and has beautiful lines, which can only be achieved with the forging process.
There is a slight difference in how this hammer distributes the weight as you swing it (compared to the classic rounding hammer), but it still feels good and forges wonderfully.

Forged from 1045 carbon steel with a custom octagon hickory handle. The story behind the name is that years ago I was at a hammer-in event with Will Stelter, and he forged his first hammer there under the instruction of Brent Bailey. This is the style of hammer that he made, which resembled an antique head on a treadle hammer. Will asked me to make one for him a few years ago, and I’ve been making them ever since.

The main differences between the classic rounding hammer and this option include: the smaller and polished faces, deeper trough lines, and the handle style. The round face is ground like a squashed ball (though with more overall crown than a classic rounding hammer), with the radius decreasing toward the edge of the face. Short, stubby proportions and big faces make this an ideal sledge for blacksmithing work, as well as a variety of other tasks. Forged from 1045 steel and heat treated with a hickory handle approximately 27 inches long. These have a round and flat face similar to a rounding hammer, along with many other nuances that you’d expect on the smaller hammers. Forged with the steamhammer. These sledges are top of the line.
The tool used to punch hammer eyes. This is used with a striker and is not a power hammer tool. Made to punch hammer eyes in sizes from about <1, to 5 lbs. A larger size is available for punching sledgehammer eyes from 6 to 16 lbs, as well as being suitable for punching axe eyes. Made with your choice of 4140 or 4340 alloy steel. Price includes one pair of top and bottom fullers! Fullers are used for isolating hot steel, and spreading metal in the direction perpendicular to the way the fullers are placed, like a straight peen hammer. I offer top fullers, (handled fullers) and their counterpart bottom or hardy fuller for going in a 1" hardy hole. This is a really good looking tool. I think it exemplifies the beauty of forging with the flowing lines, caused by the munching and upsetting. I found an old tool at a barn sale that inspired me to make this shape of flatter, so as of right now this is the only place you can get one! Now offering hand-held punches for decorative ironwork and general forging. These are forged from 3/4” round "sucker rod" (4140 or 4340), they come standard at 7” long, and the working ends are hardened and tempered. The striking ends have a forged hexagon that makes them look fantastic!
The photos show examples of eight different punches, and with the addition of a square and a round punch in the options below, there are a total of ten different punches on offer. Because all of the punches come hardened, you can use them all on annealed cold steel right out of the box, such as using the ‘Round Punch‘ as a centre punch.

Designed by Brian Brazeal, this is the most efficient cutting hardy I know of. The cutting hardy is the most essential hardy tool! The tapered shank fits a few different sizes of hardy holes from about 3/4 inch to one 1-1/8, and is perfect for a 1-inch hardy hole in particular. This a hardy tool used for putting the round die in rounding hammers, or dishing material. Shank is 1". Contact me for any questions, or check out the “FAQ” page.
The dimensions of the top of the drift are as follows: 2 ½” wide, ¾” thick. The tapered portion of the drift is 7-8 inches long, and the handle portion is approximately 6-7” long. The drift portion is forged with closed dies under the 600 lb steam hammer resulting in a consistent shape across its length. (UPDATE: I’ve recently had trouble with my closed dies and therefore some of the drifts are open die forged and ground to shape. However the end result looks and functions the same.) This axe drift is suitable to drift eyes in axes that are in the 1-4 pound range.
Note that these are for order in 4140 and 4340 alloy steel, and H13 tool steel. If you are ordering a drift made out of H13 please be aware that this steel is air-hardening and should be hit with a softer hammer to avoid dangerous fractures from forming in the drift. 4140 or 4340 is what I would recommend in most situations, but H13 is the best steel for production forging, and working with a hydraulic press in particular.

If you are ordering a drift made out of H13 please be aware that this steel is air-hardening and should be hit with a softer hammer to avoid dangerous fractures from forming in the drift. Do not quench H13 drifts in water. It is not recommended to quench 4140 or 4340 drifts in water either as there is still a risk of cracking. 4140 or 4340 is what I would recommend in most situations, but H13 is the best steel for production forging, and working with a hydraulic press in particular.
Built to the exact pattern of the drifts that I use in production hammer making, these drifts are designed to be used in a press or under a power hammer. Forged from H13 tool steel, offering the best performance you can get for this type of application. The handle portion is 1 1/4” round, and 1 1/2” round for the sledge drifts. I personally use these drifts with industrial style “V” bit tongs, such as the ones “Ballard Forge” produces.
When I make axes in my shop, after the eye is punched, I use a “opener drift” before I use the proper axe drift. This generally speeds up the processes because it can be difficult to drive the axe drift in from the beginning right after the eye is punched. This product offers both the Eye Opener drift and Axe Drift as a package deal. Available in different steel alloys to suit your needs.

These solid steel chipping hammers are forged from sucker rod, and they have a hardness that outperforms a standard chipping hammer. Most chipping hammers are designed to be made by fabrication, whereas this one is designed to show off design aspects that are only possible in forging (such as a punched/drifted hole, the fullered handle, etc.). This would make it a unique piece in a welding shop because it looks very different from one made by welding/fabrication.
